Three Students Awarded Carter Academic-Service Entrepreneur Grants

Michigan Campus Compact is pleased recognize the successful completion of projects by our 2009  Carter Academic Service Entrepreneur (CASE) grantees. These $1000 grants have been provided by the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation, sponsored by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and provide funding to establish or significantly further a partnership between a college student and a community nonprofit organization.  

Carol Plas Establishes SOS Community Services Satellite Office at EMU
Partnering with SOS Community Services Carol has worked to establish a satellite office on-campus at EMU, Plas will continue this work with a student organization to increase communication about needs and resources available about hunger and homelessness. The goal of Carol’s project was to increase awareness on campus and in the community, as well as recruit additional volunteers.

Stephanie Halley Refurbishes Initiatives Course at Crystal Springs United Methodist Camp– Watch Video
Halley is a Therapeutic Recreation major at CMU and has partnered with Crystal Springs United Methodist Camp to repair and advance their non-functional initiatives course. This obstacle task oriented simulation course integrates various life skills such as communication and teamwork. Repairing this course will enable the camp to provide interaction to people of all ages. 

Alyssa Marks Facilitates Parenting Classes with Detroit Parent Network and Communities in Schools– Watch Video

Working with Communities in Schools and the Detroit Parent Network, Marks has coordinated and administered classes to parents of students who attend Butzel Elementary and Middle school. Communities in Schools and the Detroit Parent Network provided training for successful parenting and increase parents’ abilities to aide their children in completing their homework.

Michigan Campus Compact is a coalition of college and university presidents who are committed to fulfilling the public purposes of higher education. Campus Compact member presidents are joined together in their commitment to the development of personal and social responsibility as integral to the educational mission of their campuses.

 

Michigan Campus Compact has been selected to present three $1,000 grants from the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation to students whose application indicates the most innovative and promising use of the funding to establish or significantly further a partnership between the students (and their school) and a community nonprofit organization. Administered by the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation, this grant is sponsored by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation and seeks to foster academic-service learning at American colleges and universities. Applicants and their community partners must meet the minimum requirements and winners will be chosen based on the selection criteria, which is available online. Applicants are encouraged to work with their community partner to leverage this grant with additional contributions from other sources or additional participation by students, faculty, staff, community residents or others.

In addition to the monetary grant, the winner’s proposal and final project report will be published on the Foundation’s website, www.jrcpf.org. Applicants who meet all minimum requirements and who substantially meet the additional selection criteria will be awarded certificates as program finalists and as a “Carter Academic-Service Entrepreneur” from the Foundation. Certification will be awarded whether or not the applicant is selected to be awarded the grant.

Selection:
Selection will be based upon the degree to which the proposed use of the funds is likely to produce or enhance the following:

Impact

  • Impact on the community through increased economic opportunity, improved social or civic networks, more effective education programs, more responsive public systems, etc.
  • Documentation of measurable outcomes.
  • The promise of sustainability for the proposed idea after the grant funding is exhausted.

Partnership

  • Identification of the community partner’s strengths and efforts to build upon and enhance these strengths.
  • Collaborative and data-informed planning and decision making between the student and the community partner with regard to the project.
  • Efforts to enlist other collaborators (e.g. businesses, civic organizations, government agencies, faith-based institutions, etc.).

Academic-Service Learning

  • Integration of the project with a student’s coursework, practicum, thesis, dissertation, etc.
  • An optimal blend of learning, research and service for the applicant.
